In not particular order, here are few other things I think that every PC user should consider doing on a regular or semi-regular basis.
.. performing those steps on a regular basis can help keep your computer running just a little faster, a little better, and perhaps a little longer."

Computers are a perfect fit for the entertainment room, and building your own home theatre PC is not more difficult than assembling a standard system - as long as you have the right components for the task.

A STOP error, also called a Blue Screen of Death, occurs when Windows suffers a serious error and is forced to "stop" completely.

Since a STOP error gives you no choice but to restart, troubleshooting one can be difficult. Luckily, almost every STOP error includes a STOP code that can be used to research a fix.

Step by step directions you can print out and use are wonderful but nothing beats someone actually showing you the process. It's no different when you're replacing PC hardware.

Installing Windows might sound like a daunting task but it's really quite easy, especially if you're installing a more recent operating system like Windows 7 or Windows Vista.

It's especially easy to install Windows with a little help! No need to take your PC in to the local experts for a simple reinstall - you can install Windows all by yourself!

Xubuntu is a community developed Linux-based operating system that is perfect for laptops, desktops and servers. http://www.xubuntu.org/tour It contains all the applications you need - a web browser, document and spreadsheet editing software, instant messaging and much more.

Introduction
Last week something strange happened to me, and I believe the same has happened to many of you. I was at my computer, writing and concentrating in my thoughts, when suddenly I moved very fast on my chair and kicked the voltage stabilizer with my right foot, turning everything off. My first reaction was to hold my head with the hands and deeply regret what I had done. After the anger was gone, I used my right foot again, this time to turn the stabilizer and the PC. When the operating system – Windows XP – was being loaded, surprise: a weird blue screen appeared with the following error message: STOP 0x000000ED UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME. The file system of my Windows XP had been corrupted and I was unable to use my computer.
In this tutorial we’ll talk about the operation and how to solve problems in Windows XP file system.

A network card is an expansion card which installs into a computer and enables that computer to physically connect to a local area network. The most common form of network card in current use is the Ethernet card. Other types of network cards include wireless network cards and Token Ring network cards. Ethernet network cards most often use RJ-45 jacks. Wireless network cardshttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif usually have no external connections other than a possible antenna jack. Other terms for network card include network adapter, network interface card and NIC. -  Do you know the model of your network card?  ►If you do go here : http://www.computerhope.com/drivers/nic.htm

Upgrading drivers for pre-existing Video Card device

Open Windows Device Manager. Information about how to do this can be found on document CH000833. In the Device Manager locate the device you wish to update the drivers for.

Rights-click the device and click Properties.

In the Properties window click the Driver tab.

Click the Update Driver button.

In the Hardware Update Wizard point Windows to the location of the updated drivers on your hard disk drive

Once drivers have been installed reboot.

More advice: if your network card is installed properly and in good conditions, you have to check that the necessary network protocols are also installed. To do this

• go to the Start menu

• Click the right mouse button on My Network Places, a drop down menu will appear,

• choose Properties from the menu

• This will open the Network Connections window

Double-click the network connection for your network adapter. At this stage, it should be the one with a red cross because the cable is not connected to a network yet. This will open the Properties window for that connection .If you scroll the content of the middle section you should be able to find Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

If this is not the case, you need to install the protocol by:

• click on the Install... button

• double-click on Protocol

• double-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

After a short while, you will be returned to the Properties window. It is also recommended that you install the Microsoft TCP/IP version 6 protocol, which is an upgraded version of the TCP/IP using the same procedure enlisted above.

Too much of everything

If your computer seems slower than it used to be, it probably is. My one-year old Dell laptop is much slower now than when it was new. Over time, computers get slower for a variety of reasons: files become disorganized, unnecessary software consumes resources, unused network drives slow start-up, or too many programs automatically run at startup. Larger, serious issues can dramatically slow your computer's performance too. You may have a virus or need to troubleshoot problems by clean booting.

Most of us will occasionally have to use a public computer for one reason or another. Maybe it’s an emergency situation (your own computer crashes or you get caught without your laptop when traveling) or perhaps the opportunity is just too convenient to pass up. But whatever your reasons, using public computers will always carry an inherent risk of exposing your personal data. Here are some things you can do to protect yourself and lessen that risk.

To set the transparent background on the icons, we’ll need to open System Properties in Control Panel (or right-click on My Computer and select Properties). Four things are required for transparent icon backgrounds:

1) System Properties>Advanced>Performance Settings>VisualEffects – check “use drop shadows for icon labels”.

2) Right-click on Desktop ->Arrange Icons by>Lock Web items must be cleared.

3) If you have any web content on your desktop, transparency won’t work. To check for web content: Display properties>Desktop>Customize desktop>Web – make sure all check boxes are clear.

4) Wallpaper must be image file, not html.

F you have Items 1 – 3 set correctly. I suspect the person is trying o use an html file as a background instead of image (.bmp, .jpg 0 file.

It's a dreadful way to start a day - you press the power button on your computer and nothing happens. Few computer problems are more frustrating than when your computer won't boot.

There are many reasons why a computer won't turn on and often very few clues about what might be the problem. The only symptom is usually the simple fact that "nothing works" which isn't much to go on.
